Support for Veterans

Part of Together We Can Succeed is an ongoing Veterans programme called Battling On.

A number of activities predominantly designed and led by veterans operate on Thursdays and Fridays on-site. Other activities utilise local areas and are often undertaken on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Veterans have been instrumental in designing these programmes, identifying on-site activities that they would like to undertake, such as Arts & Crafts, Cooking, horticulture, animal husbandry and repair shop projects. Off-site activities include walks on Dartmoor, cycling, fishing and historical site visits, etc... The idea is for veterans to improve their mental health and wellbeing through the greenspace intervention, activities and the camaraderie of other likeminded veterans.

Veterans have also expressed a desire to support local charities by fundraising or undertaking volunteering activites that will be of benefit to the community.

The programme is designed to be flexible, with the intention that veterans can drop in and out of some of the activities as their circumstances and lives dictate. In some instances, commitment is necessary, particularly where a formal qualification may be acheived.

Battling On’s catchment area covers East Cornwall and West Devon, including Plymouth. It collaborates closely with many charities and organisations, in particular, Plymouth Improving Lives, Project Nova, DWMS and SSAFA to support veterans.

We work with individuals and groups of varying sizes, depending on the activity and the complexities and needs of the veteran

The atmosphere at Battling On is very relaxed and informal. The aim is that veterans go away feeling better than when they arrived.
